5 Tips for Preventing Gum Disease During Menopause

The hormonal changes that are the result of menopause can affect every part of your body, including your mouth. Gum disease is one oral health symptom of menopause. While replacing your hormone levels and reversing the effects of menopause is unlikely, here are five simple changes you can make to help prevent gum disease in Bethlehem, PA and restore your gum health.


  1. Eliminate stressors. Stress increases the production of plaque along the gum line. Participating in relaxing activities, such as yoga and meditation can help you control plaque buildup.
  2. Take vitamin and mineral supplements. The nutritional deficiencies that menopause causes to your body contribute to gum decay. Make sure to get plenty of vitamin D to decrease gum inflammation and sufficient vitamin C to encourage bone and tissue renewal.
  3. Floss at least once a day. If you haven't taken your dentist's advice on the benefits of daily flossing, beginning the habit during menopause is ideal. It can pull out tartar and plaque between your teeth that your toothbrush misses, both of which if left in place can lead to gum disease.
  4. Switch to a vibrating toothbrush. A battery-powered toothbrush during menopause is not an extravagance; it is entirely necessary for optimal gum health. Gingivitis is a precursor to severe forms of gum disease, and vibrating toothbrushes are effective at preventing it from developing.
  5. Reduce or eliminate the use of stimulants. Stimulants, such as caffeine, can lead to a habit of grinding and clenching your teeth, resulting in cracked or severely worn-down teeth.
